Share

We had 4-5 active phase of Monsoon, the october was special in Interior Tamil Nadu with delay in monsoon onset they enjoyed the most with convergence in the interior district. The below show the active and dull phases of the Monsoon.

Most of the low pressure this monsoon right from November 1st week took West – North West Movement expect for the Christmas Depression which made a dip down to south. North Tamil Nadu (Chennai belt), North Interior Tamil Nadu (Krishnagiri belt) all had a wonderful monsoon, while south and delta belt missed most of the rains. Lets group the Tamil Nadu first and then see their performance region wise.

1. North Tamil Nadu and North Coastal districts – very good rains

KTCC districts (Chennai and surrounding dts) had a great monsoon for 3rd year in a row and particularly Kancheepuram rocked with whopping 35% excess rains (801 mm). Chennai district ended with 14% above normal rains (925 mm). Cuddalore and Villupuram district fell short by a bit but not too bad. Ranipet rocked

2. Western Tamil Nadu – Rocking rains and Erode gets 58% excess

What a year for them Erode district had once in lifetime North east monsoon with 58% excess, normally Krishnagiri and Dharmapuri belt gets the least rains from NEM but they got very good rains with Krishnagiri whopping 37% excess. Coimbatore too got its share with 38% excess. Only Nilgiris got less a bit with minus 13%.

3. South Tamil Nadu districts – Mixed results

Madurai has been vera level for past 3-4 years with 18% excess and virudhunagar and kanyakumari ended in positive too.  Sivaganga close to madurai ended slightly below normal while Ramanathpuram, Nellai, Tuty all ended well below normal in the negative.

For Ramanthapuram, vagai and periyar dam are having good water, so it wont be problem for them,

Only one region (Tuty and Nellai) the papanasam and manimuthar dams have 55% storage. Not too bad but it is not good sign too.

4. Delta – Except peacock district, all others failed.

Except one district (Mayiladuthurai) all other district failed with very less rains.  But the dam levels in Mettur is close to 120ft, delta and others surrounding regions farmers are not to be worried.

5. Interior TN – Super Duper rains

A special NEM for the interiors particularly the north interior ones, they got spells to remember for life time, all the depression and lows moved into North TN interiors and they got awesome rains. Trichy being close to delta was odd one out.

Overall Summary

Overall summary 21 district ended on the positive side and 17 district ended on the negative side. And for overall for Tamil Nadu, the North east monsoon ended on positive side with 1% above normal rains. Will put up the dam levels across the state tomorrow and lets see where the problem areas are.
