Heavy Rainfall for Kanyakumari & highwinds for KK, Pamban, Tuty, Vedaranayam- Delta belts

We have seen the template so many times, a cyclone crossing north AP or Odisha or West Bengal coast, the it activates the westerlies to  surge and converge over South Kerala and Kanyakumari regions. Even this year May month Cyclone Yaas when it crossed Odisha, Kanyakumari, Ramanathpuram-Pamban, Muthupet-Vedaranayam belt got to see high winds.

Heavy rainfall

Heavy to very heavy rainfall is likely over Kanyakumari and some heavy rains will happen over Tirunelveli ghat areas and Theni ghat areas. Some parts of Tuty will get heavy rains too. South Kerala districts such as Kollam, Idukki, Alapuzha, Pathanamthitta, Eranakulam are also in the path of heavy rains.

High Winds

Sustained Winds of 30-40 km/hr are expected in coastal areas of Kanyakumari, Thoothukudi, Ramanathapuram and Delta belt around Vedaranayam tomorrow.  The gusts (occasional winds) with 55-65 km/hr will be expected in coastal belts of above areas, in addition Tirunelveli will also see the gusts at times. Hence, fishermen are kindly requested to stay at home for two more days in the South TN and South Kerala coast.

Chennai goes into active phase of Monsoon with 53% water, 5th best in 20 years

2021 to be drought free for Chennai & Surrounding areas

The present storage Chennai water supply lakes is 6 tmc in our four lakes against 11.3 tmc full level capacity.  With MJO coming into our Indian Basin, we are going into very active phase of monsoon and might see most of the lakes filled up even well before end of November. Good news indeed, so after 2015, we might see some cleaning happening in our filthy Rivers. A River should have some flow or cleaning happening now and then. Happy that this year it is going to be a possibility.

With core city of Chennai getting good rains on October 22 and 29, the ground water should have improved a lot and with more rains in November and lakes expected to have good water, the ground water in Chennai is expected be improved to the point of saturation

With awesome rains in Krishna and Pennar Basin, this year again we started receiving Krishna / Pennar Water at Poondi from end of September. Kandaleru Dam has a record storage of 58 tmcft of water for the first time since the launch of the Telugu Ganga canal system in 1996 and Somasila with 75 tmc of water has overflowed twice in last 2 years. Pennar basin has seen record rains this year.

The normal quota of Krishna Water Supply for Chennai is 12 tmc at zero point. We might have got around 2 tmc of our Krishna Water share till date. Even if our monsoon fails (which wont) we are going to see most our lakes can be filled up to brim using Krishna water, as our share of around 10 tmc remains.

In the case of Veeranam, the rains in Cuddalore belt is expected to begin by 4th November and they are expected to see good monsoon too. Veeranam even if monsoon fails can again be filled up with Cauvery Water from Mettur Dam.

Overall, we will be going into 2021 drought free with plenty of water for everyone. Be it ground water or piped water supply.

More Rains expected in Western Tamil Nadu today too

More Rains are expected in Western Tamil Nadu again today too in Nilgiris, Coimbatore, Dindigul, Thenkasi, Theni and Madurai. Parts of hilly areas in Tirunelveli and Kanyakumari will get rains too.

288 mm rainfall fell in 6 hours & was one of the Nature’s balancing act for Core Chennai City

Right from start of the year the Core Chennai City (Old City Areas) was missing all the spells and in South West Monsoon Nungambakkam ended with just 293 mm rainfall in 4 months (lowest rains in last 10 years) while Meenambakkam recorded whopping 597 mm in the same period. You can see twice the amount of rainfall had fallen other parts of Chennai while core areas had not much luck, it happened to miss all the Damal Dumeel Storms in SWM. Infact in all my posts i started to quote Nungambakkam as cursed or desert.  This all started to change from October, in North East Monsoon, the places close to sea always has the advantage than the places over inland areas.

The morning of 29th October was a special event for Chennai, the Damal Dumeels brought the memories of November 23, 2015, when dryline-wetline event happened with thunders. Not often you would have seen such thunder in your lifetime, it was very intense ones. The dry air mixed with the moist air and the collusion created so much instability which resulted in such high number of thunders.

The rainfall was split by 6.00 am cut-off time and the rainfall which fell after 6.00 am on 29th October was added into 30th October rainfall. Technically, the rains started at around 3.00 am on 29th October and fell within a space of 6 hours, Mylapore got close to 300 mm and most of which fell in a space of 3 hours. Such was the intensity of the rains, blinding ones at times. The last time a place in Chennai crossed 250 mm rainfall in 24 hours was in November 3rd, 2017, when same Myalpore (DGP Office) recorded whopping 296 mm rainfall which too fell in few hours time.

It was perfect balancing act of Nature for the Core City, indeed and the curse seems to be lifted.
